Abstract

Settlement of bridge approaches has been a persistent problem for many state highway departments. In order to gain a better understanding of die problem, a research project was undertaken to identify the contributing factors and the state of the art practice for design and maintenance of bridge approaches. This research included a review of the available literature relating to approach embankments and pavements. A survey was conducted of state highway departments and other agencies involved in bridge design, construction, and maintenance. Results of the survey as well as suggestions for alleviation of the problem are presented.
