Bimanual Cooperation in Human Motor Action: A Reformulation of the Laterality Problem
The scope of the current concept of hand dominance, whether it refer to hand preference or to performance superiority, is hopelessly limited to the province of one-handed action. From the moment that the normal, two-handed activities of human beings are considered, the problem of asymmetry must be reformulated: In bimanual action, the two hands are functionally assembled and act as elements of a cooperative structure. This paper outlines an approach to this problem based on the view that there exist only three basic assembly structures, the orthogonal, the parallel, and the serial structure. It is suggested that the serial assembly structure, which obeys an asymmetric logic, may help in understanding asymmetric bimanual behaviour and functional hand specialization in humans.
