Abstract

Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) as we now understand it, dates from the 1950s. Its progress has been uneven, mainly dependent on the development of therapeutic innovations, usually grounded on new insights in basic pathophysiology, or on new technologies. Indeed, the progress of other medical activities largely determined the need for much of the ICM that is practised today.
