Abstract

The sea bed morphology of both the Arctic Ocean and the circumpolar Antarctic Seas are poorly known due to their geographic remoteness, harsh climate, and the cover of sea ice in the Arctic and extensive ice shelves in the Antarctic. This paper summarizes the present state knowledge. The future use of aero-gravimetric and satellite altimeter sensors will help to remedy this situation. Both oceanic areas are vital to paleo- and present climate as they are the source of the deep waters of the world’s oceans.
