Activation of Hormone and Growth Factor Receptors

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 295))

Abstract

Carcinogenesis is a very complex multistep process of multifactorial etiology. There is a large body of evidence confirming that steroids may in some cases be involved in tumor initiation and/or progression (see Dickson and Lippman,1986), as well as in the inhibition (Greiner and Evans,1982). Steroid hormones have been implicated in abnormal growth regulation both in tumors and tumor-derived cell lines (Lippman et al.,1976; Lippman,1982). The exact mechanism(s) by which steroids are involved in the malignant transformation of cells is not elucidated yet, but certain links exist, though very complex and not completely clear. Steroids regulate the wide range of physiological processes such as metabolism, differentiation and growth by regulating the transcription of specific genes in target cells (Yamamoto et al.1976). The regulation of transcription in eukaryotes requires the coordinated action of different transcriptional factors that interact with enhancer and other DNA control elements.
