Abstract
Faunal distributions in soft waters are often related to total hardness, pH and filterable aluminium (Chaps. 2, 7). These relationships may be explained by one or more of the following hypotheses:
-
1.
Acidity or related aspects of water chemistry exert direct physiological effects which limit species distributions.
-
2.
Species are indirectly influenced by interactions with other organisms which are themselves limited by direct physiological effects.
-
3.
The relationship with water chemistry is spurious, because species are controlled by physiographic effects which correlate with water chemistry.
