Abstract
Aretaeus the Cappodocian. the distinguished Greek physician of antiquity, wrote in the first century concerning the treatment of the coeliac affection that he recommended “drinks taken before meals, for otherwise bread is very little conducive to trim vigour”30. However, despite the enthusiasts, Aretaeus, although wise, was scarcely so prescient as to anticipate the role of gluten.
