Abstract
Desferrioxamine mesylate competes with transferrin for iron in vivo. It chelates iron, forming a water-soluble complex, which is readily excreted by the kidney. Measurement of iron in the urine during this test, therefore, forms the basis for assessing the body stores of iron.
