Abstract

This study showed clearly that F. solani was present in nearly all lesions in wrinkled-seeded pea varieties for green harvest over a three year period. As expected, F. solani occurred in a much lower frequency in round-seeded varieties for dry peas. However, there was an interesting difference in aggressiveness of the different isolates according to the site of isolation on the plant which was reflected in the top-weight. This study shows the importance of pathogenicity test in connection to disease surveys, especially of root diseases. Among nearly all species of root pathogens, saprophytic variants are very prevalent. This can lead to misinterpretation of the importance of a certain pathogen if not representative isolates are tested for pathogenicity.
