Abstract

Metal vapor lasers are characterized by high gain and short inversion times. The gain is non-uniform across the aperture of the active medium. It also builds up earlier around the periphery than along the axis [1]. The choice of resonators for obtaining diffraction limited output with good mode volume from such lasers is very complicated due to short inversion times. In this paper, results of studies on self-filtering unstable resonators of positive and negative branch type [PB & NBSFUR] and diffraction filtered resonators PFR] with copper vapor laser [CVL] are presented. A new approach based on repeated imaging of output aperture in succcessive round-trips by the resonator optics is proposed to explain the output characteristics.
