Protein analysis by capillary electrophoresis

  • Chapter
Handbook of Capillary Electrophoresis Applications

Abstract

Zone electrophoresis performed on supporting media such as agarose and polyacrylamide gels provides a powerful and indispensable tool for the separation and characterization of proteins. The analysis of proteins in the resulting electrophoresis gels requires staining with Coomassie Blue or silver stain to reveal the protein species of interest, unless the proteins are required to be prelabeled with radioisotopes or fluorophores. The procedures involved in casting the gel, sample application and staining are labor-intensive, skill-dependent, tedious and the entire process requires several hours.
