Abstract

This paper focusses attention on recent hazards caused by man’s intervention in the marine environment and their implications on biota in the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea, with particular reference to: Pollution by oil, domestic and industrial effluents, to Nile River out-flow management and to salination of Lake Qaroun in Upper Egypt.

Impacts of transgression on coastal marine habitats in the Red Sea due to urbanization and industrial development are also discussed.

The paper calls for measures to protect and manage such habitats as deemed of special scientific, economic or recreational interest.
