Effect of Soil pH on Nitrogenase Activity, Crop Yield and Rhizobium Multiplication

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Agricultural Biotechnology ((AABI,volume 23))

Abstract

In pot experiments with Vicia faba significant effects of soil pH on the nitrogenase activity and crop yield were found. Nitrogenase activity measured with a non-destructive acetylene test was closely correlated with the nitrogen fixed by the Vicia/Rhizobium symbiosis (r = 0.993). Low soil pH delayed the multiplication of Rhizobium which probably affected the infection rate of roots by the bacterium.
