Imagery and Prose Processing

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of major theoretical and methodological issues associated with the study of the relationships between imagery and prose processing. It reviews and discusses findings from a research program on visual imagery and text processing, which demonstrate the positive effects of imaginal strategies on memory for narratives and texts describing characters. Recent experiments involving texts describing geographical configurations illustrate the relevance of order of description in processing and memory for text. Future orientations in the field of imagery and text processing are outlined.
