Abstract
Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is the most important grain legume in Egypt. It is produced on more than 50% of the total area under food legumes, including soybeans. It serves as an important source of protein for humans, especially for those with low incomes. In spite of the rapid increase in population, the rise in prices of animal protein, and reclamation of new agricultural land, the area under faba bean decreased from 153420 ha in 1964 to only 113760 ha in 1984. This is mostly due to competition from other winter crops, mainly wheat and clover. However, the average yield for the country increased from 1.8 t/ha in 1964 to 2.4 t/ha in 1984. This poor yield may be the result of (a) abscission of flowers and immature pods, which may reach 75–95% (Salem et al. 1983), (b) inadequate measures to prevent or control weeds, diseases, and pests, (c) lack of adequate irrigation at critical stages during the growth period, (d) little or no application of fertilizers, especially phosphates, (e) problems of soil salinity associated with poor drainage, (f) lack of seed inoculation with effective strains of specific root nodule bacteria (Rhizobium sp.), (g) early or late planting; in Egypt, recommended planting dates are mid-October in Upper Egypt, late October in Middle Egypt, and early November in the Delta (Ibrahim 1982), and/or (h) losses due to manual harvesting and threshing.
