Molecular cloning and characterization of a gonococcal surface antigen common to pathogenic Neisseria spp.

  • Chapter
Gonococci and Meningococci

Abstract

A recombinant plasmid coding for a 28K gonococcal surface antigen has been constructed and used as a probe in DNA hybridization experiments. The plasmid insert shows strong DNA homology with all strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis tested as well as with N. lactamica, but only weak to intermediate homology with other commensal Neissera spp. Immuno-blotting has demonstrated the presence of the 28K antigen in the outer membrane of all strains of N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis tested. With the exception of N. lactamica and N. cinerea, the 28K antigen is not found in the commensal Neisseria spp.
