Abstract
Four hundred and twenty five gonococcal isolates from 390 consecutive patients (123 women, 187 heterosexual men, and 80 homosexual men) who attended the Seattle-King County Sexually Transmitted Diseases clinic at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in January-March 1985 were obtained and characterized by auxotype and serovar (A/S class). A total of 57 A/S classes of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were identified. Some A/S classes were isolated repeatedly, whereas others were isolated only rarely. A/S classification can be used together with epidemiologic data to trace the introduction, spread, and eventual elimination of gonococcal strains from a community, and to evaluate gonorrhea control strategies.
