DNA hybridisation between the gonococcal cryptic plasmid and plasmids isolated from Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria lactamica

  • Chapter
Gonococci and Meningococci

Abstract

Low molecular weight plasmids carried by pharyngeal isolates of Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria lactamica have been tested using DNA probe hybridisation. Homology has been demonstrated between the gonococcal cryptic plasmid and a group of plasmids of approximately 2.8 Megadaltons (MD) which were carried by 11/16 strains of meningococci and 2/6 strains of Neisseria lactamica tested. A group of plasmids of < 1.6MD showed no homology to the cryptic plasmid. A plasmid isolated from meningococci (strain 222) of < 1.6MD was shown to hybridise with a plasmid carried by 6 strains of meningococci and one strain of N. lactamica. All strains also carried the 2.8MD plasmid. A plasmid isolated from meningococci (strain 388), also of < 1.6MD did not hybridise with any other plasmid.
