Women at High Risk to Breast Cancer

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 57))

Abstract

It has been known for several decades that women with benign breast lesions are at increased risk of breast cancer. Numerous studies have shown that women who have undergone biopsies for benign breast lesions have a breast cancer risk higher than that of the general population although its estimated magnitude ranges from 1.5 to 4.8 in different studies [1, 2]. This risk has caused great concern among women, particularly in view of the high prevalence of painful, lumpy breasts in women approaching the menopause. It has led to ever-increasing numbers of patients undergoing breast biopsy for diagnosis, particularly in the United States.
