Abstract

Sheep have an important role in the agricultural economy of Turkey and in the nutrition of its people. They convert otherwise unusable vegetation on poor grazing land to meat, milk, fiber, and skins. Eastern, southeastern, and central Turkey are arid and semi-arid. The vast native grazing land and steppe in these regions are more suitable for sheep and goats than dairy cattle. In the more productive western regions agriculture is becoming increasingly intensified, but sheep production continues to be profitable.
