Summary

Our concept of complication risks in high myopia is probably strongly biased from (1) what the retinal surgeon tells us, and (2) statistics of visual handicap, social blindness etc. Evidently focus is on the heavy end of the spectrum in clinical reports thus founded. With the aim of drawing a valid epidemiological picture, the present longitudinal study has a quite different approach. Fourteen-year-olds with high myopia have been re-examined with 10 year intervals. With 29 available (out of 39) the oculometry status was presented at the SIDUO VII conference in 1978. Recently, 25 have been seen again, now at the age of 34. In most cases myopia has been fairly stable, and the changes in ultrasound measurements have been small, accordingly. The results are discussed, with reference also to high myopia in general.
