Abstract

Digitalis electrophysiology is straightforward by comparison with the impenetrable controversy which surrounds its use in chronic heart failure. In the following account, inotropic effects are mentioned only en passant, and the term digitalis is used to describe all glycoside- like compounds, whether or not derived from digitalis plants. Cardiac glycosides elude attempts to locate their electrophysiological actions within standard antiarrhythmic drug classifications. Effects differ in various parts of the heart, and interactions with the autonomic nervous system contribute substantially to the overall response.
