Abstract
Myocardial infarction is a dynamic pathological process which begins with acute regional myocardial ischaemia and finishes with fibrotic repair. During the acute phase, ventricular arrhythmias are a common and much feared complication. Their incidence and implications depend both upon their type and their time of occurrence after the onset of symptoms of infarction. Of the many ways to group and classify these complicating arrhythmias, separating those primarily due to acute electrical instability from those which are related to infarct size is convenient and has clinical relevance.
