Abstract

Inflammation is a fundamental component of the body’s response to trauma and the invasion of foreign material. Although inflammation can occur in all tissues, as the structure of tissue at various sites differs, the response of the tissues are not necessarily the same. It is the purpose of this chapter to review the spectrum of mediators released during human allergic reactions in general, and in three specific target sites for the reaction, i.e. the skin, nose and airway. The effect of the mediators on the target tissues and the evidence for the relative importance for each mediator, or group of mediators, in the production of the reaction at each specific site is also discussed.
