Abstract

It has not always been appreciated that a gemstone contains interior beauty and its surface appearance, attractive though this may be, is only part of the total power of attraction: such crystals as the octahedra of diamond and spinel were left virtually untouched in early times. The fashioning of stones began with the grinding down of natural crystal faces.
