This has been an exciting year for the people working on detector development. There have been major advances in several areas related to separated mass detectors using laser interferometry and the first concrete sign of a long baseline detector being funded has appeared in response to a proposal by the Orsay and Pisa groups to INFN in Italy. Bar detectors have continued to develop, with the possibility of having several bars operating in coincidence over a large part of the earth’s surface coming much closer. Analysis of the coincidence experiment between the Stanford detector, the Rome detector (at CERN) and the detector in Louisiana has yielded some tantalising results which, however, will probably have to wait for future experiments to improve the experimental statistics.
