The Influence of Sulphur and its Interaction with Yttrium on the Composition, Growth and Adherence of Oxide Scales on Alumina Forming Alloys

Abstract

The deleterious effect of small amounts of sulphur impurity on the oxidation behaviour of NiCrAl has been investigated. The oxidation of Ni-10Cr-8Al containing controlled amounts of sulphur was studied at 1000 and 1100ºC. Conventional thermogravimetry, SEM, EDX and X-ray diffraction were used to study the scale growth and composition, whereas acoustic emission was utilised to obtain detailed information on the scale adherence. The results indicated that the dominant factor responsible for the deleterious effect of sulphur impurity on the oxidation of the NiCrAl alloy was a significant change in the growth rate and the composition of the scale. Addition of yttrium improved the oxidation behaviour, not only by increasing the scale adherence, but also by alleviating the enhanced scale growth initiated by the sulphur.
