Abstract
Surface treatments have been performed by electron beam technique on a layered system formed by AISI 316 stainless steel and C40 plain carbon steel acting as substrate. Surface stress analysis was carried out by x-ray diffraction. A copper sheet was intentionally added in some samples to investigate the effect of a second phase precipitation on the crack formation. Cladding and alloying of these materials were successfully done; the resulting residual stress state was able to nucleate cracks only in presence of precipitation.
