Abstract
Chlor-alkali plants based on membrane cells have been in operation for more than a decade. With rare exceptions new plants will be based on this relatively recent technology. Over the years you have heard, read and seen why membrane cells are the technology of choice. Now that the introduction phase is over, most of the questions from potential licensees or other interested parties are related to specific design or operational ‘what ifs’. These are items that you may have heard about during plant visits or are considering in the design of your new plant. Included are holes in membranes, loss of flows, turndown rate considerations plus several others.
