Abstract

Because of their high strength to weight ratio, the usage of composite materials in load-resisting structures is increasing at a rapid rate. A composite is a combination of two or more materials and thus, the likelihood of flaws in composite materials is generally higher than that in metals. Consequently, there is a need to monitor the integrity of composite structures during and after fabrication. Since flaws and damage may develop during service, nondestructive inspections are also required in service. A nondestructive testing technique is needed not only to detect flaws but also to characterize flaws for the assessment of their severity and prescription of repair procedures. Until today, a practical method that can effectively and economically detect flaws in composite materials in a production/field environment has yet to be developed. Widespread implementation of nondestructive testing in production awaits the development of more reliable, and economical NDT techniques to meet the specific needs of various industries.
