Abstract
The paper is concerned with the conditions under which wide structures in arctic conditions may be subject to substantial ice forces. A comparison is made between field measurements made by British Petroleum in the ice sheet surrounding Tarsuit Island in the Beaufort Sea and finite element creep calculations. It is shown that there are circumstances where substantial forces can occur due to the fortuitous formation of ice sheets within which the stresses are compressive.
