Abstract

Determining the “strength” of ice has taken on great importance in the oil industry in recent years because of its use in the safe design of offshore Arctic installations. When the Arctic pack-ice (driven by wind and currents) moves slowly, it “flows” around a structure. At higher velocities it crushes under the high compressive stresses. The highest loads on the structure are applied by the ice at rates of strain corresponding to the ductile to brittle transition.

This paper examines the mechanical behaviour of ice and illustrates the application of this understanding to the design of structures required to operate in the Arctic. Some interesting problems relating to scale effects and the dynamic nature of ice loading are discussed.
