Abstract
McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King, Roy Rogers, Hardees et al provide thousands of entry-level jobs for young people in the USA. This is generally low-cost labor, yet the managers are frustrated unto desperation with bewildering turnover and sheer lack of applicants in any area that enjoys low unemployment. Billboards advertise incentives like flex-time, vacation and insurance benefits, and opportunities for rapid advancement (to where?). A recent television ad touchingly depicts a retiree gaining acceptance among the youngsters who usually man the counters. It would appear that there is an opportunity for automation in fast food emporiums. And robots should have a place if food preparation is one of the robotic household tasks.
