Comandos Integration System (CIS)

Abstract

The COMANDOS Integration System (CIS) is one of the technical streams of the COMANDOS project. The main goals of CIS are:
  • the definition of an integration methodology based on the O-O paradigm and the development of all the techniques needed to support the methodology

  • the definition of tools which will support the development of O-O interfaces on top of pre-existing application systems

With respect to the COMANDOS objectives, CIS aims to allow the COMANDOS applications to access pre-existing application systems that cannot be re-implemented on COMANDOS machines. The architecture of CIS, however, has not been conceived only for COMANDOS machines, therefore it can be used as a stand-alone Generalized Integration System.

CIS was developed with the objective to overcome, as much as possible, the limitations of the traditional mapping approach in order to allow the integration of a wide spectrum of database and non-database applications. Two new original mapping techniques has been defined: Operational and Protocol-Emulation Mapping.

One of the possible kind of applications that can be integrated using CIS are the on-line telematic services, in this area some exploitations of CIS approach are already on-going. In fact, products giving the possibility of accessing large set of telematic services with an homogeneous, easy to learn and manage end-user interface are strongly requested on the European market.

The CIS system has proved to be a good tool for the development of such kind of products; some industrial and pre-competitive research projects, based on CIS, has been already started in A.R.G. in this area, as explained below.
