Abstract
Galvanic cells using CaF2 as a solid electrolyte are described for obtaining thermodynamic and phase equilibria data on alloys both in the liquid and solid state. The method of coulometric titration, which controls the composition of alloy electrodes very accurately, is also explained. Results yield information on the Gibbs energies of mixing for liquid phases. In the solid state the method identifies what intermetallic compounds are present in a binary system as well as their range of homogeneity and Gibbs energy of formation. This information combined with appropriate atomic models gives the type and degree of atomic or electronic disorder present in the intermediate phase. Examples will be presented for binary systems involving alkali and alkaline earth metals and alkali metals dissolved in their alkali halides.
