Amplitude Evolution of Interfacial Waves in Aluminium Reduction Cells

Part of the book series: Mechanics of Fluids and Transport Processes ((MFTP,volume 10))

Abstract

We consider instabilities at the interface of two liquids (representing cryolite and molten aluminium) which arise due to electromagnetic forces, possibly combined with the Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism. Linear stability boundaries are computed and physical interpretations are given of the results. A multiple-scales analysis is then discussed which describes the amplitude evolution of a wave-packet.
