Intraoperative ultrasound during surgery for portal hypertension and liver transplantation

Intraoperative ultrasound investigation during shunt surgery for portal hypertension can provide the following:
  • visualization of the vessels of the portal system and thus detection of thrombi or anatomical anomalies;

  • location of vessels, especially the peripheral branches, which facilitates surgical manouvers;

  • demonstration of the patency of the shunt;

  • identification of any carcinomatous nodules in a cirrhotic liver.
