Intraoperative ultrasound during bile tract surgery

One of the first applications of intraoperative ultrasound, utilizing a compound scanner, was the investigation of the bile tract for the detection of stones [15, 28]. With the advent of real-time equipment, the main bile duct can be readily examined intraoperatively [5, 12, 26, 29, 30, 35, 38, 39, 42, 43, 44, 51], so much so that in many centers ultrasound represents a valid alternative to intraoperoperative cholangiography [26, 30, 46]. Furthermore, ultrasound has proved its usefulness during surgery for tumors of the porta hepatis and — a less frequent occurence — to repair post-operative stenosis.
