Themistocle:A High Angular Resolution Cerenkov Light Detector

Abstract

The present paper is a description of a high resolution Cerenkov air shower detector equipped with 18 mirrors which will be located in a first step in the French Pyrenees mountains on a site called THEMIS. The first experimental aims are to show that reasonable ultra-high energy ˠ fluxes can be observed and that an angular resolution of 0.5 mrad could be obtained in order to resolve poindike sources. If these efforts are successful, a second generation experiment with many mirrors and a muon detector, will be proposed in order to look for new thresholds at very high energy.
