Abstract

The opening address of S. C. Moss was effective in summarizing topics where progress has been achieved in the study of alloy phase stability; the long-term goals seemed to be within reasonable reach, e.g., calculation of phase diagrams from first principles, relations between structure and physicochemical properties. The purpose of this contribution is to add another dimension, and perhaps a challenge to theoreticians in this field, by showing complexities in the liquid state which must be included in the modeling of phase equilibria, such as liquid-solid coexistence and the influence of the liquid properties on the solidus curve.
