Reconstruction from Focal Volume Information
The relevant information in the focal region is not restricted to the focal plane alone. Some correction for atmosphere disturbances is possible using a simultaneously recorded defocused image. An analysis of the full 3-dimensional interference pattern in the focal volume shows that this contains all the information that is needed for a determination of the object brightness distribution independent of atmospheric wavefront disturbances. Three dimensional detection over the focal volume offers an alternative for diffraction limited imaging from the ground.
