The Large-Scale Distribution of IRAS Galaxies

Estimates of the IRAS surface brightness dipole are reviewed and results from a new complete and reliable 60µm galaxy catalogue compiled from the IRAS Point Source, Small Scale Structure and Large Galaxy Catalogs, are presented. The catalogue covers 82% of the sky and includes 17,710 sources. The dipole direction and amplitude agree with those of the earlier study by Yahil et al (1986). The interpretation of the IRAS dipole, including the results from recent redshift surveys, is reviewed.

The consistency of the IRAS data with the Great Attractor model is discussed and results on clustering of IRAS galaxies are briefly reviewed.
