The Imprint of Large Scale Structure on the Cosmic Background Radiation

Abstract

Searches for small scale anisotropies in the cosmic background radiation provide unique information about the large scale distribution of matter at early epochs. This paper reviews recent observational programs to detect such anisotropies on angular scales from 12″ to 8°. That range in angle corresponds to a scale of density perturbations ranging from roughly a galactic mass to more than a supercluster mass. In two cases, there is very tentative evidence for the existence of fluctuations in the background.

Also reviewed here are new measurements of the dipole moment of the cosmic background radiation, and upper limits on the quadrupole and other low-order moments. These results provide constraints on the local distributon of gravitating matter, whether luminous or not.
