Abstract
The velocity field of galaxies relative to the cosmic microwave background has been investigated to a distance of 3000 km/s, using two samples of spiral galaxies together with elliptical galaxies. The motions of these galaxies agree well with an optimized velocity field model that includes: a) A spherically-symmetric ‘Great Attractor’ whose velocity field dominates this region; b) a Virgocentric flow, which dominates only within 700 km/s of the center of Virgo; and c) a Local Anomaly motion which all galaxies within a distance of 700 km/s of the Local Group share. Systematic properties of the velocity field not fit by this model are also discussed.
