At 04.55 hours on 5 December 1987, the Panamanian ship Cason, navigating close to the Spanish coastline on a voyage from Antwerpen to Shanghai, sent a distress message reporting that there was a fire on board and requested assistance. At 05.55 hours, it was reported from the ship Cason that the fire was out of control and that the ship was being abandoned.
