Transrectal sonography of the prostate

Part of the Series in Radiology book series (SERA, volume 17)

Transrectal sonography of the prostate is increasing in popularity as technical improvements, including the development of high-frequency biplane probes, enhance its diagnostic capabilities. The other endosonographic route to the prostate is through the urethra. This approach, however, is subsidiary to imaging of the urinary bladder: as the 24-F transurethral radial probe is withdrawn from the bladder, its rotating tip is placed in the prostatic urethra for transverse scans of the prostate [1–3]. Traumatic and septic risks preclude the use of transurethral sonography for prostatic imaging alone; the technique is discussed in Chapter 7.
