Fiberamic R: A New Silicon Carbonitride Ceramic Fiber with High Thermal Stability

Abstract

RHONE-POULENC is developing a new silicon carbonitride fiber named FIBERAMIC ®.

The main feature of this fiber is its good thermomechanical behavior up to 1300°C – 1400°C.

With a homogeneous amorphous structure based on a continuum of silicon-centered tetrahedrons, this fiber can be used at elevated temperatures because of its structural and chemical stability.

Mechanical and thermomechanical investigations made with FIBERAMIC have demonstrated good high temperature durability such as a retention of 80% of the room temperature strength at 1400°C as well as a high temperature stability after ageing in oxidizing atmosphere. Current efforts are devoted to the production of FIBERAMIC ® at the pilot plant scale and the evaluation of thermomechanical properties of FIBERAMIC ® based composites.
