Microstructural Investigation of the Matrix Crystallisation in PPS/Carbon Fibre Composites

The mechanical properties of a composite with a thermoplastic matrix reinforced by carbon fibres are directly related to the morphology of the bulk polymer matrix (spherulitic semicrystalline structure) and that in the vicinity of the fibre surface (existence of a transcrystalline phase).

Investigations were carried out to understand the influence of the elaboration conditions (melting-crystallization cycle) on the microstructure and superstructure of the PPS matrix. In particular, the conditions to obtain a transcrystalline phase in the vicinity of the fibres were defined. The techniques of investigation were DSC, polarized light microscopy, X ray and electron diffraction transmission and scanning electron microscopy.
