Thermodynamic Analysis of Separation Process Alternatives

Analysis of minimum work requirements, based on the concept of “exergy”, provides a formal and convenient thermodynamic basis for comparing process schemes. The underlying principles of the analysis are summarised. The method is applied to a comparison of four schemes for the recovery of fuel-grade ethanol from fermentation broths. The schemes analysed are conventional distillation, freeze crystallisation, solvent extraction and reduced pressure fermentation coupled with distillation. The latter scheme is shown to be superior for the conditions investigated. The methodology is applicable to a wide range of bioseparations.
