Articulating Pin Fixed Joints

Abstract

Joints comprised of lugs connected by a single pin in shear are widely used to transmit loads. Such joints fall into two main categories.

The first provides a rigid connection between two members with the pin sitting symmetrically within the load path. The joint may be subjected to fatigue but the fluctuating loads do not deviate from the mean path.

The second type allows a measure of articulation between the two members. This produces asymmetric load distribution within the lugs even when the axial load is sensibly constant.

This paper reviews the influence of geometric variables on stresses induced by axi-symmetric loading and goes on to develop a stress amplitude analysis for the articulating joint case.

The theme is developed to examine three practical applications and shows how design may be optimised for each case.
